Yew Chung International School

This new school year is a very special time for us, which marks the 75th Anniversary of the founding of Yew Chung by my mother, Madame Tsang Chor-hang. I take this opportunity to honour her, along with the entire Yew Chung community, for her vision of an educational system that would grow from a seed planted in Hong Kong in 1932 and blossom into what is now an internationally recognised school system, the first from China to be established in the West. Now, with our students studying in some of the very top universities in over 20 countries around the world, we can honour our 75th anniversary, with a diversity of events and activities in every Yew Chung school throughout this school year, as a celebration of Yew Chung's emergence on the world stage of global education.
With global education comes global commitment and responsibility. As Luke says in the Bible, to whom much is given, much is expected. We are now facing a world, the homeland of the human race, which is in trouble. Starting with global warming, there are a host of global issues such as biodiversity, ecosystem losses and unprecedented poverty. Wherever we turn, we are encountering global problems that affect virtually all nations and all who inhabit the Earth, our planet, our homeland.
There are now massive opportunities for improving the human condition but we need to develop new concepts, new instincts and new politics of decision-making whereby we are first a global citizen, second a national citizen, and third a local citizen.
Global education that emphasizes global awareness and action with teachers and administrators, who are informed and committed, will empower students to realise that they can make a difference. Once empowered, our students can go out into the world with a common purpose and a deep commitment to resolving the global issues confronting our planet. What better way to celebrate our 75th Anniversary than to remain "Committed to Global Education" by dedicating ourselves to being the custodians of our planet in the spirit of the Beijing Olympics: "One World One Dream"! Let everyone in Yew Chung say together, "Our home is the earth, our planet our roots".
With a grateful heart,
Betty Chan Po-king, Ph.D.
Director
